MILFORD, DE (November 3, 2015)—The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) is pleased to announce that the Best of the Bars fundraiser held on October 8 at five bars in Milford was a tremendous success. Guest bartenders Eric Buckson, Brad Dennehy, Brad Eaby, SaraKate Hammer, Dr. Scott Hammer, Mike Hines, Alicia Hollis, Chuck Ivins, Mark “Petch” Petchey, Trish Rodriguez, Mayor Bryan Shupe, Shaun Strickland, Jeremy Tucker and participating bars Abbot’s Grill, Arena’s, Grotto Pizza, Longshots and Park Place helped raise nearly $9,000 to support the local breast cancer programs and services provided by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. The first time event brought together old and new friends from Milford and surrounding communities in support of breast cancer during breast cancer awareness month.

The winners of the “Best of the Bars” were awarded on Tuesday, October 27 at a private ceremony at Mispillion River Brewery. Park Place won the title of “Best Bar” after raising $5,575.50 to support the cause. Chuck Ivins won the “Best Bartender” for raising $607 and Trish Rodriguez also won “Best Bartender’ for continuing to fundraise after the event and collecting $1,124.50. All of the participants, volunteers, and supporters were thanked at the special gathering for their remarkable cooperation and encouragement.

“We are so happy the community of Milford came together to support the “Best of the Bars” during breast cancer awareness month,” stated Cheryl Doucette, DBCC’s Program Director of Education and Outreach in Kent and Sussex Counties. “It helps us raise awareness, along with the funds to continue our programs. The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a local organization. We live and participate in the communities we serve. We are so proud to be able to call the participating bars and bartenders our friends. And we know that if someone in our community is diagnosed with breast cancer they will consider us a resource and come to us for support.”

All proceeds from the Best of the Bars fundraiser will benefit DBCC’s programs that increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms and bilingual screening navigators, and offer support and resources to women and men in the local community who are newly diagnosed or facing a recurrence of breast cancer.

About DBCC:

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health. DBCC helps women with low incomes and those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.

DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition and their research efforts by helping to facilitate participation in local clinical trials. All funds raised for DBCC support programs in Delaware and the neighboring areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
