WILMINGTON, DE (December 14, 2016) — The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, (DBCC) Inc. has been on the front line providing breast cancer support and outreach in the First State for the past 25 years. This December, the agency received a gift to help further its mission in the form of a $20,000 grant from the Chichester duPont Foundation.
The $20,000 Chichester duPont Foundation grant will go towards funding the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s wellness and risk reduction programs. The Chichester duPont Foundation provides grants to organizations that promote the quality of life for American citizens and their environment.
Nationally, 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. Identification of genetic and lifestyle factors can prove effective in reducing the risks of breast cancer in most women. Prevention-based programming, through a cycle of care that includes mind, body, and spirit, is the best way to protect the community from breast cancer.
DBCC has a three-pronged approach to fostering wellness while reducing the risk of developing breast cancer - education, early detection, and referrals. The Chichester grant funding will allow DBCC to build on the moment of programs like Planting the S.E.E.D., Reaching through the Cracks, and Wise and Well, which aim to bridge the gap in healthcare to provide accurate, culturally relevant and specific information to diverse populations.
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition works to keep Delaware women healthy and educate them on healthcare options through statewide programming that focuses on a comprehensive cycle of care beginning with outreach and breast health education. DBCC looks at the total picture to provide and create services in order to meet the full spectrum of needs throughout the community.
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.
Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health. DBCC helps women with low incomes and those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.
DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition and their research efforts by helping to facilitate participation in local clinical trials. All funds raised for DBCC support programs in Delaware and the neighboring areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
