DOVER, DE (January 13, 2014)—The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) is honored to announce the 10th Annual Southern Lights of Life gala will take place on Saturday, February 22, from 6 to 10 pm at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. Southern Lights of Life is southern Delaware’s premier breast cancer fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting DBCC’s programs and services in Kent and Sussex counties. Through fundraising efforts, DBCC proudly serves over 5,000 men and women a year in the Delaware community.

Southern Lights of Life involves a sensational evening of Living and Giving, featuring local breast cancer survivors in an upbeat fashion show, live entertainment, gourmet dinner and cocktails, and exciting live and silent auctions. This year, live entertainment “Simply the Best Featuring Suzette Dorsey: a Tina Turner Tribute” will be provided by Harrington Raceway and Casino. The Tom Pizzi Trio will also be performing. The fashion show will feature 12 breast cancer survivors from Kent and Sussex counties donning fashions from local shops.

Each year, community members support the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s Southern Lights of Life gala through donations, volunteering, sponsorships, and attendance in a cooperative effort to come together and take action to defeat breast cancer. Individual reservations are $150 with various levels of sponsorship beginning at $500. The 2014 Southern Lights of Life co-chairs are once again, Gerri Coble and Michele Domenick, MD. This year’s honorary chair is Patti Key, DBCC Board First Vice President and CEO of Harrington Raceway. The Delaware State News is one of the featured event sponsors and additional sponsors will soon be announced.

The generous support of the community enabled DBCC to raise over $168,000 at the 2013 Southern Lights of Life event.  The funds were used to expand programs in Kent and Sussex counties which increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms and bilingual health navigators, and deliver support and resources to women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

This event has sold out in previous years.  To make reservations online, please visit http://www.debreastcancer.org/SLOL/  For .information about sponsorships, advertising, and item donation, please check the website.

About DBCC:

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer.  Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection.  Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health.  DBCC helps women with low incomes or those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.  DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition and their research efforts by helping to facilitate participation in local clinical trials.
