DOVER, DE (February 19, 2014)– The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) is pleased to announce two Peer Mentor Support Trainings coming up in March for breast cancer survivors. The trainings are for DBCC’s Peer Mentor Support Program which provides free one-on-one support and education to those newly diagnosed with breast cancer. DBCC Peer Mentors are trained breast cancer survivors who wish to reach out to help and support others with breast cancer. When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, it is often helpful to speak to someone who is a survivor and who has been through a similar breast cancer journey.

The first session will take place in New Castle at the Sheraton South on Saturday, March 1 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. A continental breakfast will begin at 8:45am. Space is limited and you must contact Lois Wilkinson at (302) 778-1102 x 17 or by email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to register. The Sheraton is located at 365 Airport Road (just off I-95 New Castle Exit) and the training will be held in the Patuxent Room.

The second training will take place in Rehoboth Beach at the Hampton Inn on Tuesday, March 18 from 4:30 to 8:00 pm. A lite dinner will be provided. Space is limited and you must contact Connie Holdridge at (302) 644-6844 or by email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to register. The Hampton Inn is located at 18826 Coastal Highway (next to McDonald’s).

This is a free training and no experience is necessary.  Registration is required. Topics include listening skills, the mentorship role, confidentiality, problem solving, handling difficult situations, and reporting requirements. Trainees learn through lecture, interactive activities and role plays.

About DBCC:

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health. DBCC helps women with low incomes or those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.  DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s advocacy efforts to end breast cancer.  All funds raised for DBCC support programs in Delaware and the neighboring areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
