DELAWARE (October 11, 2011)—The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC), The American Cancer Society and The Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® are collaborating on an effort to turn Delaware Pink for the month of October, recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Throughout the month, various locations in the First State will be lit pink to promote breast cancer awareness.  The three organizations are working together for a single purpose—promoting awareness and the importance of early detection.

The purpose of this campaign is to: honor those living who have survived breast cancer, as well as remember those who have lost their battle with the disease. Nationally, the percentage of women 40 years of age and older who reported having a mammogram within the past two years increased from 29% in 1987 to 70% in 2000; thereafter, it has remained relatively stable.  Also, while mammography rates improved in all race and ethnicity groups during this period, they remained persistently low in uninsured women.  Breast cancer screening has been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality.  In the US, death rates from breast cancer in women have been declining since 1990, due in part to early detection by mammography screening and improvements in treatment.  Further reductions in breast cancer death rates are possible because of the improving, regular use of mammography screening and providing timely access to high-quality follow up and treatment.  We also recognize and celebrate the great progress that have has taken place over the past 25 years in diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

This collaboration recognizes the programs and services that are offered in Delaware.  Through these agencies those diagnosed are given access to services free of charge including those at greatest risk.  The strong hope of this collaboration is to encourage early detection; and to look to the future for research and new prevention and treatment options. By “Turning Delaware Pink,” we hope the campaign serves to remind women to get screened as well as to encourage others and remind others to schedule their annual mammogram.  The American Cancer Society recommends that all women over 40 receive an annual mammogram.
