FREDERICA, DE (July 6, 2017)— As Breast Cancer Awareness month approaches, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. is pleased to welcome runners and walkers to the first annual Battle on the Turf 5K Run/Walk and 1.5 Mile Fun Walk at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica on Wednesday, September 13. This is the first-ever 5K to be held at DE Turf, central Delaware’s state-of-the-art, all-turf sports destination venue. The 5K will benefit DBCC’s programs that increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms and bilingual screening navigators, and offer support and resources to women and men in the local community who are newly diagnosed or facing a recurrence of breast cancer.

DBCC’s Executive Director, Eileen Filliben Edmunds, JD/MBA says the Coalition is thrilled to bring a new breast cancer 5K to the Kent County community. She noted that, “It is vitally important that the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition continue to support our community through outreach and education. Estimates from the American Cancer Society indicate that in Delaware 840 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017. This inaugural 5K will introduce us to members of the Kent & Sussex County community and educate the public on our lifesaving programs and services. We are excited to partner with DE Turf to showcase their amazing facility and their support as a community partner.”

This high-energy, family friend race is open to women, men, and children of all ages. On-site race registration will open at 5:00 p.m. on September 13 and the 5K race and fun walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following the race there will refreshments, music, and team and individual awards. Online registration is available at and costs $25 per person until September 11th at noon. Day of registration will cost $30 per person.

Chris Giacomucci, Executive Director of DE Turf Sports Complex, was thrilled to partner with the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition for this inaugural event. “We are happy to host this event at DE Turf and are looking forward to a great turnout,” said Giacomucci.

This race is an opportunity for community members to honor breast cancer survivors and remember those who are no longer with us. Participants can register as individuals or as part of a team. Awards will be presented to top males and females in various age groups along with Teams. The event will take place rain or shine and the 5K course is measured by Rob Muniz. NOVA Timing Systems will chip time using MyLaps bib tags.

DE Turf Sports Complex is located on 4000 Bay Road (Route 1) in Frederica. All proceeds will benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s local programs and services for those faced with breast cancer. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, visit

About DBCC:

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health. DBCC helps women with low incomes and those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.

DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition and their research efforts by helping to facilitate participation in local clinical trials. All funds raised for DBCC support programs in Delaware and the neighboring areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
