WILMINGTON, DE (May 17, 2011)—The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) and Governor Jack Markell have proclaimed that “May is Mammography Month.” As the month of Mothers’ Day, DBCC chose May as the perfect time to tell people to remind the women in their lives—their mothers, grandmothers, sisters, relatives and friends—to schedule their annual mammogram. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women over 40 have a yearly mammogram.
Though mammography cannot prevent or cure breast cancer, it can detect the disease at its earliest stages. Mammography is still the single most effective tool doctors have to screen for breast cancer. DBCC works to educate the local community, advocates for screening and treatment, and removes financial, cultural and language barriers so that all women in Delaware in need of a mammogram can get one.
“Mammography Month is an opportunity to open the dialogue about breast health,” says Melany Sammons, DBCC Program Manager. “I’m always worried about women that only think about breast cancer in October. This is another great way to remind the women that we love to take charge of their health and get their health screenings year-round and not just in October.”
