GEORGETOWN, DE (March 22, 2011)—This past Saturday over 250 community members participated in the VIDA!  Latina Breast Health Forum sponsored by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC).  This free event was held at the Georgetown Fire Hall and educated participants about breast cancer screenings, treatment and survivorship.  The forum was presented in Spanish and English.

Dr. Francisco Rodriguez of Atlantic Surgical Associates spoke at the event and dispelled some of the most common myths about breast cancer.  Two survivors, Yolanda Alvarez and Elsa Rodriguez-Trejo, also spoke at the event about their journeys with breast cancer and their survivorship.

The Women’s Mobile Health Screening (WMHS) Van was on-site and provided screening mammograms.  A few participants had clinical breast exams and others took advantage of the free cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure screenings provided by Beebe Medical Center.

The event was well attended by members of the Latina community, vendors and members of the media.  Two Hispanic radio stations, La Exitosa and Maxima, had live remotes at the event.  Miss Hispanic Delaware also attended the event and signed autographs for participants.

“Our first annual VIDA event was a huge success,” said Cheryl Doucette, DBCC Program Manager in the Lewes Office.  “The involvement from the area hospitals and health related vendors was key in making this a worthwhile event for the Latina community.  Participants were able to gather useful and very important health related information.”

Funding for this program was provided, in part, from a grant from the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
