WILMINGTON, DE (August 11, 2016)—The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and Races2Run are pleased to announce that the Sixth Annual Women’s Race for the Pink Ribbon 5K will take place on Wednesday, September 14 at Dravo Plaza on the Wilmington Riverfront. The Women’s Only Race will benefit DBCC’s programs that increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms and bilingual screening navigators, and offer support and resources to men and women in the local community who are newly diagnosed or facing a recurrence of breast cancer.

On-site race registration will open at 5pm on September 14 and the race will begin at 6:30pm. The first 700 registered will receive a t-shirt, goodie bag and admittance to the post-race party with music, wine garden and beer for those 21 years of age and older. Online registration is available at and costs $25 per person until September 12th. Day of registration will cost $30 per person. Participants can register as individuals or as part of a team.

DBCC’s Executive Director, Vicky Cooke is looking forward to the sixth annual 5K. She noted that, “Breast cancer is primarily a disease that affects women. Nearly one in eight will be touched in their lifetime, so having a 5K run/walk for just women is very important to us. This is our 6th annual event and it helps us raise awareness for our support and lifesaving programs in the local community.”

The women-only race is also an opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors and remember those who are no longer with us. Races2Run Director, Barb Kursh said, “This race was stared in honor and in memory of my three friends who were touched by the disease, Renee “Betty” Ridenour, Debbie “Snake” Bruss and Marsha Gullo Frerichs. It is a great way for me to honor those I know who’ve been touched by the disease and I am glad to see so many other teams come out in support of a loved one.”

Awards courtesy of Women’s Sports Specialties will be presented to the overall female winner and to the top three runners in five age groups. First place age group winners will receive a free pair of running sneakers from Women’s Sports Specialties. Teams will also be awarded. The top fundraising team will win the Pink Cup and the largest team will win the DBCC Cup. The event will take place rain or shine and the 5K course is USATF certified fast flat. NOVA Timing Systems will chip time using MyLaps bib tags.

Last year’s event raised over $36,000 for DBCC programs and services. As of August 9, major race sponsors include Races2Run, Women’s Sport Specialities, Navient, Fox Rothschild, PJ Fitzpatrick, Kiwanis Club, EDis, and Horizon Services. All proceeds will benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s local programs and services for those faced with breast cancer. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. About DBCC:

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health. DBCC helps women with low incomes and those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.

DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition and their research efforts by helping to facilitate participation in local clinical trials. All funds raised for DBCC support programs in Delaware and the neighboring areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
