MILFORD, DE (March 7, 2016) – The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) in conjunction with the Women of Wellness, LLC, are proud to announce the Total Woman’s Conference: Empowering the Wise and Well Woman to be held on Saturday, April 9 at the Milford Library from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. This free, educational conference for women will present information and interactive sessions on what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on breast health, nutrition, exercise, financial fitness and stress management. The program will include dynamic workshops, lunch, and giveaways for participants.
The Total Woman’s Conference is one component of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s Wise and Well program. “We know that nationally, African American women have the highest death rates from breast cancer of all of the racial groups and are 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women so we wanted to implement a program to decrease those statistics and break down barriers to viable treatments in Delaware,” said Chadeia Mitchell, Education and Outreach Director for New Castle County for the Coalition. “Medical research indicates that comorbidities increase the risk of dying from disease. Many women face barriers to finding solutions. Our program teaches easy to replicate methods to treat comorbidities and reduce risks for developing breast cancer, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other health conditions.”
Research suggests that having a condition like diabetes, in addition to breast cancer, increases the risk of dying from the disease. Black women have a higher incidence of diabetes and other comorbidities such as hypertension that reduce survivorship. Adopting healthy lifestyle choices like exercise, balanced eating, and stress management can substantially decrease a woman’s chance of developing comorbidities and reduce a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer. The Wise and Well Wellness Tour began in October 2015 in Wilmington and will continue across the state of Delaware.
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services of education, outreach, and early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Its mission is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope.
Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Sussex and Kent Counties, DBCC’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates to educate and encourage women to take responsibility for breast health. DBCC helps women with low incomes or those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.
DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s advocacy efforts to end breast cancer. All funds raised for DBCC support programs in Delaware and the neighboring areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
