November 17, 2009 (Wilmington, DE) – The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. (DBCC) received a year-long, potential six-figure, financial commitment to breast cancer awareness and research from realtors Kathleen Carney and John Williams of The Carney & Williams Team of RE/MAX Integrity, also known as CarneyWilliamsHomes.com, in Chadds Ford PA. As much as 20 percent of each home sale commission they receive during calendar year 2010 – or one-half of one percent of the closing price of every home their team sells – will be donated the DBCC. And, with annual home sales of $15-18 million in recent years, and a goal of $20-25 million next year, this dynamic sales team has the potential to make a sizeable contribution. “We hope to be able to have a very meaningful impact on breast cancer research,” says Williams, “and we want to do that in a way that helps women in our local community through the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.”
Williams and Carney, the husband-wife team who co-founded The Carney & Williams Team of RE/MAX Integrity in 2007, see closing a sale on a house as opening the door to a home, a new chapter in someone’s life, and an opportunity to help strengthen the community by supporting local non-profits with a portion of their commissions. “We’ve contributed to a number of organizations that help families and kids in the area,” says Williams. “It’s part of who we are to help others and give back to our community. Now we want to make a more substantial commitment to something that’s very personal and meaningful to us – which is breast cancer.”
The combination of Carney’s sister battling breast cancer this past year and the powerful, moving experience they had at DBCC’s “Northern Lights of Life” at Longwood Gardens in September further affirmed their decision to support DBCC.
“With one in eight women getting breast cancer, everyone knows someone who has been affected by the disease,” Williams says. “We’ve seen the financial impact cancer can have on families, too, with people needing to sell or downsize their homes,” he continues. “Not every sale is a happy one, but we can do our part to help families in the future.”
The funds raised by Carney & Williams will support DBCC’s Clinical Trials Mentoring Initiative, the only program of its kind in the State of Delaware. The ultimate goal of the research-based peer mentor program is to improve education and understanding about the clinical trials process in order to facilitate greater participation in trials that may lead to newer/better treatment for the individual and overall advances in breast cancer research. Without enough participants, however, trials cannot be conducted.
DBCC’s Clinical Trials Mentoring Initiative provides trained advocates to work in a comprehensive partnership with researchers, the medical community and patient enrollees, and is designed to provide systematic change in the way that potential participants gain an understanding of the complex details, benefits and patient protections of clinical trials. DBCC developed a specialized clinical trials education program (part of advanced training for mentors within its Peer Mentoring Program) by using educational materials from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
