Each day, DBCC takes action to defeat breast cancer:

In 2011,

  • DBCC trained 37 new peer mentors, joining the 225 peer mentors who provided one-to-one support, resources, and research-based information to 259 mentees in 2011.
  • DBCC engaged 104 newly diagnosed women in our Beginning Your Journeyprograms in partnerships with the local cancer centers.
  • DBCC performed 754 screening mammograms and provided transportation to women on the Women’s Mobile Health Screening Van from January 2011 to December 2011.
  • DBCC engaged 25 women in Nurture Yourself, a program for those living with advanced breast cancer that occurs monthly.
  • DBCC attended 75 health fairs and community events, and presented 32 breast health programs reaching over 13,000 people.
  • DBCC completed 6,788 individual and 7,093 contacts in a group setting through education and outreach programs.
  • DBCC provided interpretation for 136 women on the Mammography Van. In addition, through the mobile mammography van, DBCC enrolled 91 women into the Screening For Life Program (SFL), providing support to uninsured and underinsured women in Delaware.
  • DBCC’s First Annual VIDA Latina Breast Health Forum was attended by over 250 Latina community members who received important information about breast health and breast cancer in Spanish. Attendees also received free health screenings from local hospitals and medical offices.
  • Through the Breast Care Fund, DBCC assisted women diagnosed with breast cancer with quality of life issues when other funding sources are not available. The Fund has helped women pay for diagnostic exams, lymphedema sleeves, prostheses, insurance co-pays, and treatment bills.
  • DBCC held the 14th Annual Breast Cancer Update, which is the only event of its kind in the State of Delaware that provides cutting edge information and education on the most current topics in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, detection and survivorship to annual audiences of over 400 medical professionals, survivors, and members of the general public free of charge.
  • DBCC was awarded the 2011 Delaware Academy of Medicine Executive Director’s Award, honoring a non-profit in the Delaware community that embodies the principles of education and the promotion of public health through collaborative programming.

Other information:

  • Between June 2005 and December 2011, DBCC performed 5,446 screening mammograms on the Women’s Mobile Health Screening Van.
  • In September 2010, DBCC was presented with the prestigious Community of Excellence Service Award as part of Christiana Care’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center’s Annual Community Oncology Awards for its support of clinical trials in the community.
  • In 2010, DBCC trained 11 Clinical Trial Peer Mentors in the advanced, more specialized clinical trials education program.
