DOVER — Got a bedazzled jean jacket that’s never seen the light of day?
Here’s a chance to wear it while honoring cancer survivors.
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition will once again host a night of dance and celebration at its Lights of Life Gala on March 7.
The event is set for 5-9:30 p.m. at Bally’s Dover, with the theme of “Diamonds & Denim.”
Attendees are encouraged to “dust off your boots and show off your sparkle” to support the coalition’s effort to raise awareness about the condition and aid survivors.
“We all know someone that has suffered through the disease, and we need to keep catching it early,” said Mackenzie Blithe, a senior marketing specialist at DBCC. “If we continue to talk about it and put our resources towards supporting those diagnosed, we’ll have better outcomes for everyone.”
New this year is the Diamond Pull, in which partygoers can win an $800 jewel. Guests purchase a numbered glass of champagne, then one number will be chosen, and the holder of that glass will pull a diamond of his or her choice. The gem was donated by the coalition’s resale shop, Great Stuff Savvy Resale & Home of Wilmington.
There will also be a live auction, including donated items from various businesses and area sports teams, as well as low-digit license plates.
In addition, the survivor showcase will allow local breast cancer survivors to share their stories of living with the disease and how the coalition has helped them.
Proceeds from the gala will aid the organization in providing support through survivorship and education programs. These include one-on-one mentorship opportunities and activities like kayaking.
Also, the DBCC is bolstering its effort to reach more Haitian Creole and Spanish speakers for breast cancer screenings. That joins its Viva la Vida! support group specifically for survivors who speak Spanish.
Last year, Ms. Blithe said, the gala hosted 450 attendees and raised over $200,000. She added that the bulk of the coalition’s funding comes from this yearly gathering.
Businesses can support the upcoming gala through sponsorship packages that range from $30 for an honorary tribute to $15,000 for a speaking opportunity. Presenting sponsors also receive a welcome reception.
“You’re gonna feel good about going to the gala,” Ms. Blithe said. “It’s a very heartwarming experience.”
