Breast Health When You’re Young

Understanding breast health when you’re young is important for your personal health. Knowing your own body, and what is “normal” for you is key in reporting any changes to your health care provider for proactive checks and screenings.

Know what is normal for your body.

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) supports breast health at all ages and encourage teens, young people, and adults to do routine self-breast exams (SBE) to stay “in the know” of your body and aware of any changes.

If you or someone you know has a breast health concern, please contact our team for advice or assistance on next steps and how to get the care you need and deserve!

Use your voice, if you feel something – say something!

Self exams can help detect changes in-between routine clinical breast exams, and mammograms which can help save lives – but should never replace them!

Your Family’s Health History Matters

You may not be thinking about breast cancer screenings right now, but knowing your family’s health history is one of the most important things you can do to protect your future health!

Many people don’t realize that a history of breast cancer on either side of the family, not just your mother’s side, can affect your own risk. Relatives on your father’s side are just as important when it comes to understanding your family history.

Having these conversations with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives can help you learn about any cancers or inherited health conditions that run in your family. This information can help you and your healthcare provider make informed decisions and the best plan for your health and care!

Conversations help you make informed decisions about:

  • When to start breast cancer screenings
  • If genetic counseling or testing could be beneficial
  • Steps you can take to reduce your risk and stay healthy

The sooner you know your family history, the more empowered you’ll be to take charge of your health. Understanding your risk doesn’t mean something will happen, it means you have the knowledge to make proactive choices and advocate for yourself.
