Health professionals say early detection is one of the most effective ways to improve outcomes, particularly for conditions like breast cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

DOVER, Del. — A free community wellness fair in Dover later this month is designed to do more than offer basic health screenings — it aims to close long-standing gaps in access to care for Delaware residents who need it most.

The MCC Multi-Cultural Community Wellness Fair will take place Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Blue Hen Corporate Center, bringing together healthcare providers, nonprofits, and outreach organizations focused on improving health outcomes across underserved and multicultural communities.

Organizers say the event is built around a simple but urgent goal: meet people where they are, and remove barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking care.

Addressing Gaps in Access

The fair focuses on populations that may face challenges such as cost, transportation, language differences, and cultural stigma — all of which can delay or prevent early diagnosis and treatment.

Health advocates point to disparities in cancer detection, chronic disease management, and maternal health as key concerns in these communities.

By offering services in a welcoming, community-based setting, organizers hope to build trust while connecting residents directly with care providers and resources.

Free Screenings and Early Detection

Attendees will have access to a range of no-cost health screenings, including:

  • Pre-clinical breast exams
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Lead screening
  • Glucose testing
  • Cholesterol screening
  • HIV testing

Health professionals say early detection is one of the most effective ways to improve outcomes, particularly for conditions like breast cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Education, Support, and Navigation

Beyond screenings, the event will provide hands-on assistance and information designed to help residents take next steps in their care.

Resources available on site will include:

  • Help scheduling annual mammograms
  • Nutrition and diabetes education
  • Mental health and substance-use support
  • HIV/AIDS prevention information
  • Domestic violence resources
  • Early intervention services for families
  • Support for minority small-business owners

Attendees will also be able to learn more about homebirth options, as well as doula and midwifery care — services that have become increasingly important in addressing maternal health disparities.

Community Partnerships Driving Impact

A key partner in the event is the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, which will provide breast health education and help connect individuals with follow-up care and screening services.

Organizers say collaboration between healthcare providers and community organizations is essential to reaching populations that may otherwise fall through the cracks.

A Community-Centered Approach

Rather than requiring residents to navigate complex healthcare systems on their own, the wellness fair brings multiple services into one accessible location.

The goal, organizers say, is not only to provide immediate screenings, but to create lasting connections between residents and the resources they need to stay healthy.
